The Port Jervis community is mourning the passing of retired Police Lieutenant Joseph A. Duryea, affectionately known to many as “LT.” Duryea passed away on September 12, leaving behind a legacy of dedicated service, leadership, and friendship that touched fellow officers and members of the community.

Joseph Duryea devoted 22 years to the Port Jervis City Police Department, beginning his career with the department on June 20, 1983. During his distinguished career, he served in a number of important positions, gaining the respect of colleagues through his commitment to public service and his willingness to take on leadership responsibilities.

Remembering Lieutenant Joseph Duryea

Throughout his time with the department, Duryea worked as a patrol officer, detective, shift sergeant, and eventually lieutenant. He retired from the Port Jervis City Police Department on April 14, 2005, concluding more than two decades of service to the community.

Beyond his official responsibilities, Duryea was deeply involved with the Police Benevolent Association and maintained strong connections with the officers he served alongside.
